PENINSULA STATE PARK — One of Door County’s most popular beaches is temporarily closed because of high bacteria levels.
Nicolet Beach in Peninsula State Park was posted as closed Wednesday by the Wisconsin DNR.
The Fish Creek municipal beach also had a bacteria advisory beginning Wednesday.
BEACH CLOSINGS AND ADVISORIES MAP
Lab results indicate elevated levels of E. coli bacteria in nearshore water.
Levels higher than recreational water quality standards or guidelines require either a swim advisory or a beach closure, depending on the levels found.
Bacteria levels can fluctuate over several hours and since conventional lab analyses take 18-24 hours, results may not be reflective of present bacteria levels.
Beginning in 2021, the Wisconsin Beach Health website and database have moved to the DNR at dnr.wi.gov/topic/beaches.
